Cyber goths with their colors and crazy style are a lot different than most other goths. The subculture derives from elements of goth, raver and rivethead fashion. Unlike other kinds of goths that usually look up to the past styles they are inspired by the future and cyberpunk. Information, futurism and technology are very important for cybergoth subculture.
The term 'cybergoth' was created by Games Workshop for their cyberpunk role-playing game Dark Future. The actual style appeared in year 1999.
It might be relevant to point out that cyberpunk is not another style, it is a science fiction subgenre that is known for high technology and low life. Cyberpunk appears in literature, movies, anime and manga and music.
Music Preference
Cyber goths are special even in what they listen to because it is far from deep lyrics and gloomy gothic rock. Cyber goths mainly listen to futurepop, industrial, EBM (Electronic Body Music) Synthpop, Techno, Noize, Aggrotech and also other club-oriented dance music styles.
The most popular groups are:
- VNV Nation
- Icon of Coil
- Combichrist
- Ayria
- Angelspit
- Neurotic Fish
- KMFDM
- Suicide Commando
- Rammstein
- Asphyxia
Below you can play a Combichrist song to get a general impression of the music a cyber goth listens to. But there are many different tastes and many different genres so this is just one of the songs.
Clothes and accessories
Cybergoth fashion combines rave, rivethead, and goth fashion, as well as drawing inspiration from cyberpunk and other forms of science fiction.
In cyber goth outfits you can often see vests, corsets, neon colored or black fishnet, big platform boots from Demonia or New Rock or a similar brand, leather jackets or pants, and leather chokers. Leg warmers are very popular, especially 'fluffies' . Besides goggles that are usually worn on forehead or around the neck - gas masks are also a popular accessory. Sometimes even PVC doctor's masks. In general the preferred materials are latex, PVC and Lycra. Common motives on cyber goth clothing are circuit boards and radioactive and biohazard signs. Additionally, anything that shines in the dark can improve cyber goths outfit - led lights, light reflectors and glow in the dark clothes and accessories.
Hair
Typically cyber goth hair is very brightly colored and usually the bright neon colors are combined with a black base. Cyber goths usually wear hair extensions and/or cyberlox (synthetic dreadlocks) and those can be made of hair, tubes, rubber, foam or belts and many times they finish up the look with goggles. Headbands are added under the goggles often for more comfort while wearing them.
Makeup
The makeup is usually also very colorful, dramatic big and crazy, but dark makeup that looks more traditionally goth is also very often. Guys usually don't wear makeup or wear just a little bit.
