Gothic Style and Music
Trad Goth
Trad stands for 'traditional'. Trad goths are the original goths, this is the style that was called 'goth' first. It evolved from punk and it had big emphasis on music and poetry. In its essence trad goth is punks younger and more sophisticated brother.
Music preference
Trad goths love the original 80's music.
Some of their music favorites are:
- Bauhaus
- Siouxie and the Banshees
- Sisters of Mercy
- The Birthday Party
- The Cure
- Velvet Underground
- The Clash
Example of trad goth music - Bella Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus
Click play to listen to the song below.
The release of the single Bella Lugosi's dead was oficially the first gothic rock record that has been released but at that point everything was still mixed with punk so we can't really say which record was the first to be released because it depends on how exactly you distinguish punk from 80's gothic rock.
The title references Bela Lugosi, who was the main actor in the 1921 film Dracula. Since he died in year 1956 and the single was released in year 1979 he had been dead for more than 20 years when the song was made.
Style
When talking about their style we should first start with the hair. Trad goth hair was big black and obvious. When dying the hair they aimed to get them as matte as possible with no shine at all.
Their skin was extremely white and often combined with dark makeup - back lips, dramatic eye makeup.
Moving on to the clothes - 80's goths wore casual 80's clothes , mainly black but other colors were also worn from time to time. Most of their clothes were handmade or restyled by them because back then there were no gothic clothes available in shops. They often wore fishnets, leather, chains and bats/skulls accessories.
